ASH WEDNESDAY is the first day of Lent. Lent is the forty day long liturgical season of fast and prayer before Easter. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the desert; where according to the bible he endured temptation by Satan. Lent is a time of repentance, fa sting and preparation for the coming Easter. It is a time of self - examination and reflection. In the early church Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today Christians focus on their relationship with God. Often choosing to give up things to remember that Christ gave the ultimate – his life. The ashes are given to each person in the sign of the cross on their forehead. They are twofold reminder. We are human. We are mortal. From dust we came and dust we shall return. Also, ashes a re used in the bible as a symbol that someone was in deep sorrow over their sins. It is an outward symbol of an inward repentance of sins. On Wednesday February 22nd there will be two Masses held for Ash Wednesday. York Creek Lodge at 10:30 a.m. and Holy Trinity Parish at 7:00 p.m. A reminder that this is a day of Fasting and Abstinence from meat.

You are the hope of all who suffer.
Your Son Jesus touched the sick,
Shared the sorrow of those who mourn,
And consoled all who longed for healing of any kind.
Gift us now so that we may discover
Through suffering and fear,
The strength to live with grace and humor.
May we discover through doubt and wholeness.
Bless our caregivers and Help them to be a consoling presence among us.
Amen.
